Types of Vehicle Transmission
There are several types of transmissions used in vehicles today, each with its own unique characteristics and advantages:
1. Manual Transmission
This is the traditional type of transmission, also known as a stick shift. The driver manually selects and engages the gear using a combination of a clutch pedal and a gear lever.
2. Automatic Transmission
This type of transmission automatically changes the gear ratios as the vehicle moves. This frees the driver from having to shift gears manually.
3. Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)
A CVT doesn’t have a set number of gears. Instead, it can adjust to any number of situations, providing a seamless acceleration without gear shifts. It uses two pulleys connected by a belt instead of gears to achieve a range of gear ratios.
Signs That Your Clutch or Transmission Needs Repair
Common Clutch Repairs We Perform
Clutch Check
A clutch check is an inspection of the clutch system in a manual transmission vehicle to ensure it’s working correctly. Our clutch check can involve the following steps:
- Feeling the Clutch: Press the clutch to see if it feels firm with the car off. It should be relatively easy to press or have a spongy feel.
- Listening for Unusual Sounds: After turning on the vehicle, listen for any unusual growling sounds when the clutch is engaged or disengaged.
- Checking for Leaks: If your vehicle has a hydraulic clutch, it will be inspected for leaks.
- Inspecting the Cable: If you have a cable-operated clutch, the condition of the cable will be checked.
- Testing the Clutch: This involves starting the vehicle safely, selecting a high gear (like 4th gear), and slowly releasing the clutch while giving the engine gas.
- Test Drive: This allows for real-world assessment of the clutch’s performance. During a test drive, you can note any difficulties in shifting gears, unusual noises, or burning smells.
Clutch Adjustment
This involves adjusting the clutch’s linkage to ensure it disengages and engages properly.
Clutch Replacement
Over time, the clutch disk can wear out and must be replaced. This job often includes replacing the pressure plate and throw-out bearing as well.
Flywheel Resurfacing or Replacement
The flywheel can become damaged or warped due to excessive heat and friction. In some cases, it can be resurfaced, but in others, a replacement may be necessary.
Master or Slave Cylinder Replacement
If these components fail, they will need to be replaced. These parts help control the flow of hydraulic fluid in the clutch system.
Common Transmission Repairs We Perform
Transmission Fluid Change
This routine maintenance task involves replacing old, dirty transmission fluid with new fluid. With our mobile services, you don’t need to spend time looking for a transmission shop in OKC.
Transmission Rebuild
If the transmission is severely damaged, it may need to be rebuilt. This involves removing the transmission, replacing the damaged parts, and then reassembling it.
Transmission Replacement
In some cases, particularly with severe damage, it may be more cost-effective to replace the entire transmission rather than rebuild it.
Solenoid Repair or Replacement
Solenoids control the flow of fluid throughout the transmission. They need to be repaired or replaced if they become damaged or malfunction.
Torque Converter Repair or Replacement
The torque converter is a vital part of an automatic transmission. If it malfunctions, it can cause several issues, including slipping, overheating, and shuddering.
